Opened in 1990 by pizza-making royalty, Grimaldi’s is the brainchild of Patsy Grimaldi (who’s been slinging pie since 1945). It lies in the shadow of the monumental Brooklyn Bridge and its three-story restaurant has become one of the most popular stops for those looking for a traditional New York pie.

Although the pizzeria has changed ownership and Patsy Grimaldi now owns a new restaurant (which we’ll cover shortly), Grimaldi’s pizzeria is still churning out some of the best coal-fired pizza in Brooklyn. The family-owned and operated pizzeria has expanded to multiple locations in Jersey, but their original pizzeria in Brooklyn is undoubtedly the best. They make just about everything in-house, churning out traditional and creative pies daily.

Opened in 1965 to Italian immigrant Domenico (Dom) De Marco, Di Fara has been a labor of love for over 50 years. Working 7 days a week for decades, De Marco became a staple for his uncompromising and relentless pursuit to create the best pizza in Brooklyn.

After his passing in March of 2022, New Yorkers from all over flooded the pizzerias social media pages with words of support and love. The outpouring of love was palpable. His kids have continued De Marco’s legacy, continuing to dish out some of the most famous pizza in Brooklyn.

Since then, there’s been a constant rivalry between the two. They both have constant lines, but to me, Juliana’s stands head and shoulders above Grimaldi’s. Fighting words — I know, but Juliana’s is (technically) the original, that’s still run by the founder.

Juliana’s white pie just might be the best pizza in Brooklyn.The fresh ingredients shine and the crust is perfectly thin — just enough to provide a delightful foundation without intruding. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the sauces! Everything feels like it was picked the morning of.

The restaurant doesn’t accept reservations, and instead begins taking names for their wait list at four. I suggest showing up before 3. Once you’re on the list kill some time nearby, but don’t forget to turn on the ringer on your cell. That’s one phone call you really don’t want to miss!
