Strange metal behavior is traditionally associated with an underlying putative quantum critical point at zero temperature. However, in many correlated metals, e.g., high-Tc cuprate superconductors, strange metallicity persists at low temperatures over an extended range of microscopic parameters, suggesting the existence of an underlying quantum critical phase, whose possible physical origins remain poorly understood. Systematic investigations of physical scenarios giving rise to such a critical, non-Fermi liquid (NFL) phase are therefore crucial to better understand this puzzling behavior. In a previous work [Bashan et al. arXiv:2310.07768], we considered a solvable large-N model consisting of itinerant electrons coupled to local two-level systems (TLSs) via spatially random interactions, inspired by the possibility of emergent metallic glassiness due to frustrated competing orders, and found that the system hosts an NFL phase with tunable exponents at intermediate couplings. In this work, we expand our investigation to the following: (i) We study the extent to which this NFL phase is generic by considering various deformations of our theory, including coupling of electrons to multiple operators of the TLSs and arbitrarily directed TLS-fields. Two-level systems (TLS) of unclear physical origin are a major contributor to decoherence in superconducting qubits. The interactions of individual TLS with a qubit can be detected via various spectroscopic methods, most of which have relied on the tunability of the qubit frequency. We propose a novel method that requires only a microwave drive and dispersive readout, and thus also works fixed-frequency qubits. The proposed two-tone spectroscopy involves a microwave pulse of varying frequency and length to excite TLSs of unknown frequencies, followed by a second pulse at the qubit frequency. TLS parameters can be estimated from the qubit population as a function of the first pulse frequency and length.

A key principle of emergency management is establishing an incident command centre. The immune system deals with microbial threats by this same approach, using organised lymphoid tissues. At the early stages of infections, conventional dendritic cells (cDCs) transmit intelligence on the nature of the threat to regional lymph nodes, which along with the spleen, tonsils and Peyer's patches, constitute the secondary lymphoid organs. Within lymph nodes, immune responses are optimised as large numbers of effector T cells search for their cognate antigens on the surfaces of cDCs, under the supervision of regulatory T cells. However, widespread and chronic threats require additional command centres closer to the action. “Tertiary lymphoid structures” is one name for these de novo frontline assemblages, along with “lymphoid follicles”. The process, termed lymphoid neogenesis, occurs within many organs in infectious, autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, and in transplanted organs and malignancies [1]. Because tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) develop in multiple lung diseases (table 1), defining their roles in pathogenesis is a crucial unmet goal that experimental models are well-suited to address.
