🌟 Scholar Spotlight:Baptiste TankwaWhat ignites the innovative spirit of our scholars? For Baptiste, anÉcole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne Laidlaw Scholar, his pursuit of developing artificial muscle technology for facial paralysis is not just a research project, but a mission to transform medical science. Inspired by his exposure toNeurosoft Bioelectronics(an EPFL-related company) and the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for those with facial paralysis, Baptiste has dedicated himself to this groundbreaking work in Biomedical Engineering.Baptiste's journey involves pioneering research into dielectric elastomer actuators, with a focus on restoring essential facial movements for individuals affected by Bell’s palsy and similar conditions. His work is a testament to the fusion of creativity and scientific rigour, driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in the world.Reflecting on his experience as a Laidlaw Scholar, Baptiste shares, "[Being part of the Laidlaw Scholar community] has granted me the chance to connect and learn from individuals who bring a diverse range of experiences, histories, and cultural perspectives."Learn more about Baptiste's cutting-edge research and his vision for innovation in medical technology 👉:https://lnkd.in/eSzrE4yG#ScholarSpotlight#BiomedicalEngineering#Innovation#EPFL #LaidlawScholar

As professors, it is imperative that we break new grounds by introducing the state-of-art to our students. Here is a quick snap from this afternoon as the students, mostly undergraduates, from my “Engineering Mechanics in Biomedical Applications” class attempt to develop computational models for respiratory transport in anatomic geometries.#BasuLab

To our MSOE Biomedical Engineering alumni: It is with a heavy heart that I share the recent (2/7/24) passing of Dr. Vince Canino who was the founder of our program and MSOE faculty member for close to 45 years. His complete obituary can be found at:Obituaries | Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral & Cremation Services (schmidtandbartelt.com)For all of you who may have had him for a professor, you may still (even painfully) recall his often intentionally vague, ridiculously complex assignments, and the near-impossible senior design projects. Only until many years later did I, as possibly many of you, realize that his methods and expectations were not so much that we got correct answers or projects that even worked, but rather it was the mind-altering, skull-stretching efforts we put into trying to do so that was most important. Here, he believed, was how professional grit and a critical thinking, ‘can do,’ engineering mindset was best developed. The sheer volume of work, accompanying time pressures, and maddening frustrations allowed us to not only master the abstract, teach ourselves new material, but remain life-long learners as well. While Dr. Canino’s inimitable style may not be especially popular, let alone acceptable today, it worked for many of us, but also left others quite banged up and scarred.Nonetheless I and hoping that many others will remain forever grateful and blessed for the crossed paths with Dr. Canino. Doing so has altered my very destiny. Thanks for it all Vince and rest in peace, Man.

The university-to-industry pipeline is central to American innovation, and North Carolina is home to top-performing public universities with researchers developing groundbreaking technologies. NCInnovationoffers grant funding to support university research just when it’s needed most: in the "valleyofdeath." See NCI’s latest blog for more on this problem and how we’re working to solve it: https://lnkd.in/en4bQ7zJ

Biomedical Engineering has a huge impact on our society, improving health care in many ways. Last Friday, 24th November, High School students from @cejaumebalmes came to our facilities at CREB UPC - Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya to learn the potential applications of Biomedical Engineering. Our researchers prepared the activity #Escolab "Human-machine Interfaces: the communication between our brain and computers". #biomedicalengineering #sciencecommunication #scienceandtechnology

The next evolution in smart technology might already be available to us — our bodies. Researchers at Purdue University are working to revolutionize how we interact with technology. Noses in phones could one day be a thing of the past.“Right now, our gateway to the internet is this very exciting box in our hands. We find ourselves heads down looking at it for a significant fraction of our awake time. If that’s not the kind of the future we want, then technology needs to evolve. Instead, the smartphone could be deconstructed and distributed all around you at suitable locations such that it becomes invisible to the eye.” - Professor Shreyas Sen, Purdue University College of EngineeringThis research was funded, in part, by the AFRL/AFOSR Human Performance and Biosystems program, managed by Dr. Patrick Bradshaw.
