We rarely think about how something as mundane as building codes affect our lives, but they affect everyone who not only steps foot in a building but lives on the planet. They determine whether a building (and perhaps you) will survive an earthquake or a hurricane and also how much greenhouse gasses you, as the occupant/user, will contribute to the atmosphere. They also help determine the affordability of utility bills and upfront costs of construction.I've been involved w/ my State Chapter of AIA on helping to guide the updates to the codes adoption process. Our state has the weakest codes in the nation and has ruled that local jurisdictions may not adopt anything more stringent (I was not included in those decisions). Like any political process in the USA, it can be nuanced and challenging. Money plays an enormous role in who has the loudest voice. The outcomes and effects on our lives are not obvious, but they matter to all of us - in our homes and workplaces, as well as to those across the oceans.

The practice of fencing of land with out any development effort has become the challenges in many cities ......On the other hand land is still the precious resource we have ....That is why we should use it to the benefit of the general public .....Evenif the lease proclamation is clear the law remains on paper ....Anyways how do you examine this measure?

The 2nd Stonehenge tunnel judicial review was dismissed today.Environmental JRs of this kind can generate lots of publicity, as this one has. And occasionally they succeed (see e.g. the *1st* Stonehenge tunnel JR!). On the other hand, remember that:1. Most claims fail - e.g. only around 10% of legal challenges to Planning Inspectors' decisions succeed, and so...2. Prospective challengers: make sure you've found your silver bullet. You're likely to need it!As Reuben Taylor KC (who acted successfully for National Highways) says below - the judgment contains useful guidance on the extent of information a decision maker needs to consider relating to alternatives and on the briefing of ministers.

Mandating the type of appliance has no place in building codes. It should simply be about the physics of the structure for life safety. I am torn about energy codes, I see how it is a good thing to be energy efficient but at the same time it is a ridiculous standard to enforce, do we not have free will to build exotic and elaborate buildings? Perhaps we should all live and work in tiny boxes with no windows because that is the most energy efficient. Rather efficiency should be incentivized with tax credits or something, again doesn't really have a place in building codes but rather with local municipalities...glad to see ICC/IBC not forcing anything through yet.
