Goku's Complete Family Tree (2024)

As the mascot of the Dragon Ball franchise and arguably the most recognizable character in anime besides Pikachu or Sailor Moon, Son Goku has countless numbers of fans across the world. However, Goku's large family, Saiyan heritage, and marriage to Chi-Chi are just as iconic as the martial arts warrior himself.

Goku may be the universe's strongest fighter, but he didn't get that far all on his own. Examining the rest of Goku's family tree reveals just how his kin, both blood-related or otherwise, shaped the carefree Saiyan's journey through life and the legacy he left behind.

Son Goku Is The Greatest Martial Artist In The Universe

Sent to Earth as a baby after the destruction of his home planet Vegeta, the young Saiyan was found by Grandpa Gohan in a bamboo forest and the rest was history. Gaining the name "Goku" from his adopted father figure, he trained in martial arts as soon as he could stand up on his own two legs and has since gone on to become one of the most powerful people, not only on the planet but in the entire universe.

Defeating the Demon King Piccolo was only the start of Goku's journey, as he went on to learn about his alien heritage and travel throughout space battling extra-terrestrial warlords, monsters, demons, and even the gods themselves in a never-ending quest to grow stronger. But while his need to grow stronger has sometimes come off as obsessive, Goku is a man who cares deeply for his family, raising and training his two sons, Gohan and Goten, alongside his wife Chi-Chi and going on to be an immensely supportive grandfather later in his life for the young Pan. He may sometimes have his priorities wrong, but Goku has, and always will, care for his family.

Bardock Was The Violent But Caring Father Goku Never Met

A near-perfect example of the Saiyan race's warrior pride, Bardock was the biological father of Goku and his brother, Raditz. However, he had little time for parenthood as he worked under King Vegeta and Lord Frieza to take over planets to be sold for profit to the Frieza Force. While a despicable practice, Bardock knew no other way of life, and despite his species' violent ways, he always made a point of inspiring camaraderie among his teammates, as well as always showing love and support to his wife Gine.

Ultimately, his true self shined through his species' tendency for violence during the waning days of the planet Vegeta when he learned that Lord Frieza planned to blow up his home planet and exterminate the Saiyan race. This revelation prompted Bardock to do everything in his power to ensure his infant son made it off the planet before its destruction and go on to battle Frieza to save his people. While he failed to save his planet, Bardock succeeded in saving his children and still made a doomed attempt to fight Frieza, showing both he and Goku share a virtuous determination.

Gine Was The Kind-Hearted Mother Of Goku

Being weak and compassionate in a society that only values strength and profit, Gine was considered a Low-Class Saiyan, with little in the way of status or respect among her fellow Saiyans. The only position she could get within Saiyan Society was as a butcher and cook — one of the few non-combat-oriented jobs that Saiyan Culture permitted as a necessity for survival.

Yet Gine still captured the love of Bardock, who went on to marry her and have two children, Goku (born Kakarot) and Raditz, the latter of whom went on to work alongside the Prince of All Saiyans, the young Vegeta IV. When Bardock warned Gine about Frieza's cruel design to destroy Planet Vegeta, she helped her husband smuggle Goku off-world, but sadly she was not able to join her son before Frieza destroyed Vegeta.

Raditz Was Goku's Malignant Older Brother

Nicknamed "Raditz the Runt" by his more powerful brethren, Raditz was spared from the same fate as his mother and father thanks to him being on an expedition with Prince Vegeta IV and his aide, Nappa, with all three of them being off-world at the time and only learning about their homeworld's destruction through Frieza who lied about his involvement in its demise. Becoming a member of the Frieza Force alongside Vegeta and Nappa, Raditz assisted in killing off the inhabitants of planets for Frieza to conquer and sell, becoming quite proficient at it, but never reaching the level of power like his Saiyan contemporaries.

However, in a fated encounter, Raditz traveled to Earth in search of his missing brother, Kakarot, discovering that his younger brother not only survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta but had no idea of his Saiyan heritage, going by the Earthling name Goku and acting as a guardian to the planet. Knowing that this would incur the wrath of Frieza, Raditz attempted to kill Goku and take his son Gohan to be indoctrinated into the Frieza Force, but the combined force of Goku and Piccolo saw to Radtiz's demise.

Grandpa Gohan Was The Father Goku Needed

When Goku arrived on Earth, he was immediately found by the wandering martial artist monk, Son Gohan, who heard the infant Saiyan crying deep within a bamboo forest. Taking Goku with him to his home on the summit of Mount Paozu, Son Gohan adopted Goku as his own and raised him as his own. Grandpa Gohan taught him how to fend for himself by training Goku in martial arts and also teaching him the morals of a defender and protector of the less powerful.

For eight years, Goku and Grandpa Gohan lived happily in isolation until, tragically, Goku accidentally transformed into his Saiyan Oozaru form (alternatively known as the Great Ape form) during a full moon and killed Grandpa Gohan while in a feral state. Not knowing the true reasoning behind Grandpa Gohan's death for over a decade, Goku would later plead for Gohan's forgiveness in the afterlife and go on to name his firstborn son after his beloved father figure.

Chi-Chi Is The Spirited Wife of Goku

The daughter of the Ox-King and Princess of Fire Mountain, Chi-Chi became immediately infatuated with Goku after he saved her life from a tyrannosaurus rex while the two were both children. Training herself to become an incredible martial artist like her childhood crush, Chi-Chi became one of Goku's many rivals during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Much later, the two would marry.

From then on, Chi-Chi abdicated from her role as the future Ox-Queen of Fire Mountain and lived with Goku on Mount Paozu, where the two raised their firstborn son, Gohan, as well as their second son, Goten. While her role as a martial artist has been greatly overlooked since her marriage to Goku, she still knows how to command respect from Goku and the Z Fighters, with many still fearing her wrath after years of motherhood.

Gohan Is Destined To One Day Exceed His Father's Power Level

Named after an adopted grandfather he never had the pleasure of meeting, Son Gohan (sometimes named Son Gohan Junior) was the first son of Goku and Chi-Chi. Forced into a life of fighting at the young age of four after his Uncle Raditz attempted to kidnap him, Gohan was forced to adapt quickly, training under Piccolo to become thrice as powerful as his father when he was a boy.

Gohan was truly put to the test when his father was killed by Perfect Cell, having to battle the insanely powerful bio-android on his own, not only succeeding in that regard but also going on to create an entirely new Super Saiyan form known as Super Saiyan 2. Despite his innate power, Gohan's true passion was in the field of science, becoming a scholar of biology in his adult years after he married the love of his life, Videl. Despite his desire to live a quiet life, whenever the moment arises for him to put on his combat gi and fight, Gohan proves that he will one day dwarf his father's current power level.

Goten Is The Childish Yet Heroic Second Son of Goku

Born after his father's death at the hands of Perfect Cell, Goten relied on the stories his mother and brother told him to learn about his father until the day he could finally return from the Other World. When he turned seven, the young boy was finally able to meet his father when he was briefly allowed to return from the dead to compete in the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, both being baffled by how similar they looked to one another.

Despite being a child, Goten — alongside his childhood friend Trunks — would often callously go off to fight some of the premier powerhouses of the universe, battling Majin Buu and countless members of the Frieza Force before he had even become a teenager. Well into his teens, Goten continued to battle highly powerful opponents, and while he doesn't always win, he's always enthusiastically waiting for the next person he gets to fight.

The Ox-King Is Goku's Father-In-Law And The Grandfather To His Kids

The towering father of Chi-Chi, the Ox-King of Fire Mountain was once a martial artist comrade to Grandpa Gohan, with the two training under the legendary Master Roshi together. When he first met his future son-in-law, he was initially wary of the young boy until he proved himself by saving his daughter from a ravenous tyrannosaurus rex, earning Goku the undying respect of the great warrior-king.

When Goku and Chi-Chi had their first son, Gohan, the Ox-King immediately domesticated himself and took to becoming a grandfather with great glee; although he was disappointed to learn the couple didn't give his grandson a name with the word "ox" in it. Since then, Ox-King has remained devotedly by the side of his daughter and his two grandsons, choosing to live nearby so that he could always be by his family's side and support them when needed.

Pan is Goku's Feisty Granddaughter

The daughter of Gohan and Videl and granddaughter of Goku and Chi-Chi, Pan's history is a little bit unclear given that a large sum of her story is told in the now non-canon Dragon Ball GT anime series. As far as the canon timeline is concerned, Pan was born during Gohan's brief retirement from fighting and began training under Piccolo, who took up the role of her sensei. Eventually, she would be kidnapped by the Red Ribbon Army in an attempt to lure out her father, though the combined power of Gohan and Piccolo foiled the scheme.

Pan's last canon appearance was in the Peaceful World Saga wherein she was finally old enough to participate in the 28th World Martial Artist Tournament, finishing off the tournament by battling her Uncle Goten; the victor of the fight has remained unconfirmed. Within the non-canon Dragon Ball GT, fans got to see Pan in her early teens as she accompanied her Grandpa Goku and Uncle Goten in finding the mystical Black-Star Dragon Balls and later played a role in battling the alien bio-android known as Baby.

Goku Junior Is The Far-Off Descendant of Goku

Decades after the events of Dragon Ball GT, Goku Jr, the great-great-great-great-grandson of Goku, was born. Despite being the spitting image of Goku and Goten, Goku Jr was significantly more passive than his ancestors, preferring to avoid conflict and often being picked on in his school for being a "crybaby."

However, when his great-great-grandmother Pan became incredibly ill, Goku Jr was forced to control his fears and go on a great odyssey to find the Dragon Balls to cure her, fighting the Demon Lord Yao to procure the mystical relics. After saving Pan, Goku Jr became far more adept at martial arts, eventually following the age-old tradition of his family by signing up for the 64th World Martial Artist Tournament.

Beat Is An Obscure Video Game Descendant of Goku

An even further-off descendant of Goku than Goku Jr, Beat was the lead protagonist of the Japanese exclusive Dragon Ball Heroes franchise, being an Earthling time traveler who was able to visit pivotal moments in Dragon Ball's history. Initially, Beat did not know his connection to Goku, being a simple, powerless boy living in Hero Town — until he started playing a video game created by Capsule Corp known as "Super Dragon Ball Heroes," which allowed him to play as various major individuals from the Dragon Ball franchise.

Eventually, his skill in the game became so noteworthy that Beat was sought out by a man known as Hero Master and the superhero, Great Saiyaman 3, wherein he learned that the events within the game were the real history of the world and that the powerful opponents in the game truly existed. This roped Beat into a brave new world of fighting people both within the video game and in the real world, eventually being recruited by Xeno Trunks to join the Time Patrol. While not very much a canon character, Beat acts as the furthest point in Goku's recorded family tree to this date.
