What does the F3 error code mean?

The F3 error code indicates an issue with the microwave’s keypad. Specifically, it means the control board is detecting a short circuit condition within the membrane keypad or its circuit connections.

The keypad is the buttons and touch controls on the microwave oven’s control panel that allow the user to input cooking time, power levels, and operating modes. If electrical shorts develop between keys or traces, it will send erratic signals to the control board and trigger the F3 error display.

Where is the keypad located?

The keypad is the smooth plastic panel on the microwave’s control housing. It contains the numbered buttons 0-9, power level, time cook, start/pause, and other functional keys. These activate when pressed to make contact between two thin membrane layers inside.

Ribbon cabling runs from beneath the keypad directly to the main control board of the microwave oven. A short within the membrane layers or wiring can cause the F3 error code to be shown.

Step-by-step troubleshooting of F3 errors

With an understanding of the keypad function and connections, we can systematically troubleshoot an F3 error code:

1. Visually inspect keypad

Unplug the microwave oven and examine the keypad closely. Look for any cracks, damage, or moisture on the panel surface or around the edges. Ensure it is clean and fully seated in the control housing.

Moisture or physical damage can allow short circuits between the interior switch layers. Even minor distortions or foreign material can cause key contacts to incorrectly short when pressed.

2. Enter diagnostic mode

Consult the microwave service manual and enter diagnostic or test mode to electronically verify keypad circuits. Try pressing keys one by one to isolate any issue.

If keys are unresponsive in test mode, the full keypad will need replacement as it is likely an internal short within the membrane layers.

3. Disconnect keypad

If keypad testing is inconclusive, unplug the unit and detach the ribbon cable connecting the keypad to the main control board. Power up the oven again without the keypad attached.

If the F3 error persists without the keypad connected, it indicates an internal control board failure versus an external keypad issue.

4. Check keypad resistance

Use a multimeter to check resistance between keypad circuits with it is disconnected. Look for shorts between adjacent traces or keys which should show an open circuit.

  • No continuity should exist between keys in a properly functioning keypad.
  • Any measured resistance between circuits indicates moisture damage or a short.
  • Carefully inspect alignment if reconnecting the original keypad.

5. Replace keypad

If moisture ingress, distortion, or resistance checks indicate an internal keypad short, replace the microwave’s membrane keypad panel.

  • Order an exact replacement membrane keypad from the manufacturer.
  • Very carefully detach the ribbon cable from the faulty keypad.
  • Remove any screws or brackets securing the keypad and extract it.
  • Install the new keypad in the proper aligned position.
  • Reconnect the ribbon cable to the control board.

Confirm the new keypad resolves the short circuit issue.

6. Replace control board

If the keypad physically and electrically checks out, replace the microwave oven’s main control board to resolve the F3 error code.

7. Verify repair

After any repair, reassemble and verify the F3 code is cleared. Test all keys to confirm proper detection and oven function. Monitor for any recurrence of the shorted keypad error.
