When exploring this wonderful state from east to west (or west to east!), it’s impossible to ignore the best of the best bookstores in North Carolina.

We’ve visited so many, not just to see if our NC Bucket List book or our NC Mountain Towns book is at each place. These bookstores are important downtown pieces throughout the state, and we should all do our best to support them!

More than a few of the bookstores we feature have been in business for decades while some newer additions are making noise in cities and towns from our mountains to the coast.

Regardless of how long they’ve been around, ALL are crucial to the communities they inhabit–and not just to readers. These bookstores provide services in the form of book clubs, events, and more community-building that just can’t be replaced by big-box stores.

Here’s how we’ve organized this guide:

  • Bookstores in North Carolina (Western)
  • Bookstores in North Carolina (Central)
  • Bookstores in North Carolina (Eastern)

We know there are many more, but for now, here is our pick of 25+ North Carolina bookstores whose shelves and online stores are awaiting your eyes and orders!

Whether you’re a new resident, a frequent visitor, or a local, we’re leaving no detail behind. If you live in North Carolina and are wondering, “What are the best bookstores near me?” we think this NC travel guide will help you out!
